Commissioner Emery Gainey has devoted his entire career to law enforcement in Florida. He is a member of the Attorney General’s senior executive management team and currently serves as the Director of Law Enforcement Relations, Victim Services & Criminal Justice Programs and is the liaison between federal, state and local law enforcement administrators and the Attorney General. Commissioner Gainey plays a key role in the development, implementation and execution of the Attorney General’s criminal justice related initiatives.

On May 20, 2016, Governor Rick Scott appointed Commissioner Gainey to serve as Sheriff of Marion County, where he served until January 3, 2017, before returning to the Attorney General’s Office.

In October 2008, Commissioner Gainey was appointed to serve as a member of the 8th Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission, with his term ending October 2011. He was reappointed on October 21, 2011 by Governor Scott and served until January 24, 2016.

Prior to joining the Attorney General’s Office in 2007, Commissioner Gainey served with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, holding several key positions during his tenure including Chief Deputy, Commander of the Uniform Patrol Division and Homeland Security Commander.

Commissioner Gainey is a member of the Florida Sheriffs Association, Florida Police Chiefs Association and FBI National Academy Associates, Florida Chapter. He serves as a board member for Special Olympics Florida and other numerous community boards and professional organizations.

Commissioner Gainey is a graduate of the University of Florida and the FBI National Academy 188th Session.
